My favorite Taiwanese snack is “shaved ice”. I get it at Coco’s Cafe, in Austin.
They put some shaved ice in the bottom of a big cup/bowl and then you get to add 4 ingredients. They have several choices, puddings/custards, jelly, sweet beans, fruit, mochi, and pearls. My favorites are mochi (rice balls), pearls, and 2 scoops of taro. Then they put in more shaved ice and top it with condensed milk and syrup.
A very different concoction, but I think it is wonderful!

I am not sure what to think of those things. I really liked the other thing they have, with balls on the bottom you suck up through a really fat straw.
They call that Bubble Tea here in Madison–there’s a cart on Library Mall that sells a rainbow-coloured assortment. I think the balls are really big tapioca…but what is tapioca?
They call them pearls here, and I think they are made with molassas (and maybe tapioca too?)
I just found them in a mall here and they were called bubble tea too. And they had my favorite – taro. I just love taro.
