Giant Fungus is World’s Largest Organism
Release from The Canadian Journal of Forest Research
Armillaria ostoyae in Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon is possibly the largest living organism in the world. Although I have also heard this attributed to the Blue Whale, the Great Barrier Reef, some sort of saline bacteria, etc. An older story, but still very interesting…

“sugar bug”

Hunter had his first dentist appointment yesterday. He did really well with the examination and x-rays, surprisingly – from our experiences with getting him to brush sometimes… The dentist said that he has a cavity on one of his front teeth and it needs to be fixed. We have two options; let them do it in the office, which would entail shots into the gums and filling the cavity right in front of him, and the chance that the filling would not be good enough till the tooth fell out. The other option, was to take him to the hospital for out-patient surgery, and have them put him under, then fill the cavity and place a crown on it that will last untill the tooth falls out, and they would also be able to perform more cleaning and more x-rays in the back of his mouth.
We have decided that the secound route will be best for us. I am scared of having him put under, but I don’t want him to be afraid of dentists from now on, because one shoved a needle in his gum, and I don’t want to have to have it refilled before the tooth falls out. So anyway, his first visit has turned out to be an ordeal…

-Oh, the title “sugar bug”, was told to me by my friend SW, his son referrs to cavaties by this name :)

Chiggers

I have not had many chiggers since we moved to the Austin area about 5 years ago, but still get them so bad when we go back home to visit in the summer…
Hunter had his first encounter with them this weekend.
They are an amazing little creature. So small, yet able to inflict such torment on us :)

trip back home

We went to see the not-in-laws this weekend to visit. Had a great time! Hunter loved it and they all loved Hunter!
We got to relax out of the 9x degree weather and talk and play with the neices, who were also there.
While in Iowa Park, we got to see Markita’s Mom & Dad and Uncle & Aunt and their daughter and friend. And went to the mall. It was just not the same as we had remembered it. All the fountains were gone and the stores had been rearranged. But it still had the skylights, couldn’t miss those. We had both grown up in the area and Wichita Falls was the place to go shopping, and the only mall around for miles and miles.
Hunter and the girls had a wonderfull time in Bryson too. They got to play with the dog, all the chickens, the duck, the squirrel, the rabbits, and the cows. There was 2 baby cows for them to see. We brought some cake out and they took turns feeding it to the cows. It was amazing to see Alex, who is afriad of small dogs, actually feed a 900 pound cow!
And Mom & Dad cooked an excellent meal! Fresh green beans and potatos, pickled beets, macaroni & tomatos, and buttered dodger.
I brought back several starts of our wild garlic (the elephant varaity), and some starts from our wild schallots to put in the flowerbeds and around the new house.
I also found a relaxing time to shoot the single-shot .410 at a feedsack for awhile.
Then everyone else wannted to join in… Alex (her first time with a shotgun) and Hunter (was close enough to see how it worked)… and Markita… Miss-I’m-a-star-skeet-shooter ;)

convenient sushi

They now have sushi available in the cafeteria downstairs.
My “instant gratification” factor just went up a notch ;)
