Hunter had his first dentist appointment yesterday. He did really well with the examination and x-rays, surprisingly – from our experiences with getting him to brush sometimes… The dentist said that he has a cavity on one of his front teeth and it needs to be fixed. We have two options; let them do it in the office, which would entail shots into the gums and filling the cavity right in front of him, and the chance that the filling would not be good enough till the tooth fell out. The other option, was to take him to the hospital for out-patient surgery, and have them put him under, then fill the cavity and place a crown on it that will last untill the tooth falls out, and they would also be able to perform more cleaning and more x-rays in the back of his mouth.
We have decided that the secound route will be best for us. I am scared of having him put under, but I don’t want him to be afraid of dentists from now on, because one shoved a needle in his gum, and I don’t want to have to have it refilled before the tooth falls out. So anyway, his first visit has turned out to be an ordeal…
-Oh, the title “sugar bug”, was told to me by my friend SW, his son referrs to cavaties by this name
I don’t know what would be the best thing to do. On the one hand, being awake and takig the shot to numb the area is bad enough and to have him be awake for this is bad… but on the other hand, I just couldn’t validate having to get a crown for something that will fall out!! They are $$$$!!!.
The cavity can’t be that bad!
Just put the filling in and maybe, just maybe, the experience will force him into brushing like he is supposed to do!
I think he may be a little young yet to correlate the experience of having the tooth filled with brushing properly. And besides, nothing is too expensive for my little man
Well said!!! I concur
Hunter had his surgery yesterday. It went really well. He was the best little boy! Didn’t give anyone any problems. You can not tell that he has a cap on his tooth, the dentist did a great job. And after he woke up good from the anesthesia, you would not even know that he had surgery for he was playing and laughing.
