south llano river

We went camping with our friends, Kristy & Melissa, this weekend at the South Llano River. Hunter loved it!
We went for a hike down by the little lake and the river, and found a snake skin up in a pecan tree. Which no one thought was very interesting but me. In fact, they didn’t like the idea of snakes climbing trees at all.
White-tailed deer were all over the place, but we didn’t see any turkeys. I did find a few turkey feathers and Hunter brought them home. I showed Hunter how to tell what all the feathers are, and the tracks, and what animal the different poop comes from. Which made Kristy comment on how knowledgeable of “sh!t” I am, and that I was just full of interesting “sh!t” stories, ha. And I picked a few wild berries, which are good for making jellies (and I think are quite tasty, sort of like stretch berries on briers) and some Texas Persimmons (a sweet fig-like taste). Melissa finally tried the berries, but no one else was into the eating of wild things. But they did say that we would never go hungry with Sarah around, ha.
Hunter went with me to the bird blinds and enjoyed watching the birds. And he enjoyed picking wild flowers. There were still a few around, even though it is summer and so hot. Over a hundred degrees every day. So the river felt so good! We spent a big part of the first day in the river. Hunter floated in the tubes with us and enjoyed that. Me and Kristy spent some time in the hydraulic by the dam, just floating around in circles and talking. I went snorkeling, but didn’t see much, just a few little fish.
We also hiked up to the top of one of the big hills, to the scenic overlook. I had to carry Hunter about 3/4 of the way, but it was fun. We saw a short-tailed lizard and a beautiful grass snake (see the pics). And I heard a rattle snake near the trail, but was not allowed to go find it and take a picture.
And the last night that we were there, we had a big storm! It was wonderful. Lots of lightning, thunder, wind and rain. I didn’t like the aerodynamics of the camper much and did not know the wind-rating, so that was a little troublesome (I’m much more accustomed to a tent). The misting rain that morning was nice too. Not many people like for it to rain while they are camping, but I think it is nice. I love going for walks in the misting rain. The sun came out in time for us to pack up, so that worked out well.
So Hunter’s first camping trip was great!
