during the next meeting with the service manager, he gauranteed a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty on the whole motor, not just the repair. the rental car was nice for the trip to canton, but the trip to the coast would not really be a good "proving ground" for the new repair. so he allowed use of the rental car for the trip. (the tech who originally made the mistake is paying for the rental car). i also told him, which justifies making the tech pay a little more, that when the tech came out to see the car... that he filled the car with oil and drove it back to the shop (causing more damage than necessary). i didn't know about this till later. i told him that it should have been towed and he agreed.

checked with a lawyer about this. he said that it could be taken to another mechanic and have them tear the engine apart to check it, and then send the bill to xxxxx.
i don't really want it taken apart again.

so i went to meet with the service manager. i grilled him quite a bit about whether there was damage to the cylinders, the rings, the rocker arms, etc. i asked if anything showed up when they strained the oil. he said yes, just babbit material from the bearings. i asked him several times if that was the only thing found floating around and if it caused any scratching at all while it was flowing around (yeah, i know how soft it is).
he was adimate that the only damage he found was with the crankshaft & bearings. He took me out and showed me (what he said was) the crankshaft that came out of my car. there was a bit of scoring from the failure of a couple of bearings. not all of the bearings were bad. he told me that he didn't get the crank machined down and fitted with oversized bearings, that he did it right and put in a brand new crankshaft. and he said that he didn't reuse any of the bearings that were still good, that he replaced all of them with new ones. i told him that i respected what he did, but that i still felt uncomfortable about the whole situation. he said he would put a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty on it. and that the car was all detailed and ready to go. i told him that i would let him know tomorrow.
