Snow

I’m so excited, we are actually getting snow!  The yard and roof are white. Also, lots of sleet and lightning & thunder.  A complete winter weather package :)

Trees

Finally got some new trees for the yard.  A pear, two peaches, a live oak, an ash, and a burr oak.  It will take awhile to get to climbing size, but Hunter is already excited about it.  I had wanted to use my IMSI Turbo Floorplan Pro program to plan my landscaping…  but not everyone likes the idea of cyber-scaping, my mom likes the “put thatin’ over there” approach.

Thanksgiving

We had a good Thanksgiving.  My mom came down to visit and we made all kinds of food.  4 pies, cupcakes, 3 cassoroles and some sweet potatoes.  And we had two fried turkey’s and some ham (and everything everyone else made).  All the family from Wichita Falls came down and we went to the kinfolks house in San Antonio.  That night we had one of our yearly game nights with Trivia Pursuit and Boxers & Breifs.

speaking of jobs…

Speaking of jobs, I read that Dell is cutting back on it’s workforce.  Hiring freeze and encourged unpaid (or permanet) vacations.  The ironic thing is that I have been contacted 5 times now by contract compaines to come back for my old job.  The thing with big companies is that when they need to let people go to make shareholders happy, they still need the job done, so they actally have to keep their workforce the same, so they just replace them with contractors, which don’t really count (although they do the exact same job).

IBM

I’ve found a new little gig to supplement my consulting business.  It is doing contract work for IBM.  I’ve been installing new servers in stores and deploying workstations in hotels.  Kinda fun.

funny OCR

I was scanning my “State of Texas” drivers license with a program that automaticaly performs an OCR on all scans…  So when I went to save the pic, it showed the default title as “pestsex.tif”.  I thought wth where did that come from..  so i looked it up to see if it was some sort of virus-like issue, makes you wonder doesn’t it?  So I scanned it again and the file name was different.  As it turns out, the OCR engine was reading “state of texas” as “pestsex”!

kxan

So, yet another “service discontinuation”…  It seems that Time Warner and KXAN are having problems and the result is that I can no longer watch any NBC shows.  I have rabbit ears on a tv upstairs, but it doesn’t work too well.  So I am missing Chuck, Days of Our Lives, My Name is Earl, The Office, and Saturday Night Live.  I only like to watch a few shows and that is most of them.  Now I have to watch them online or try to use the other tv.

KXAN – http://blogs.kxan.com/kxanTimeWarner/

Timewarner – http://www.thetruthhurtskxan.com/

This is an interesting statement from KXAN:

“Here is a basic analogy: If you were to get a drink of water at a public drinking fountain, it is free, but once the water is placed in a package, it is no longer free. The same holds true for local television programming delivered through a subscription-based provider.”

sooo… aren’t we paying the provider of the “package”?  Oh well, same ole arguments about who owns the RF after it leaves the station… just like back in the day of cable descramblers, “who owns the signal after my VCR retransmits it?”, etc.

T-Ball

Hunter has started t-ball.  And I’m an assistant coach (although he tells me that I’m not his coach when we are at home, ha).  He really likes baseball, but he had to sacrifice playing soccer this time since the schedules conflicted.  He wants to play football next and then hockey.  Ha, not sure about the hockey, but there is an ice skating rink in Austin, so I’ll check on it.  Other than sports he’s doing great in kindergarten and just loves it.  And the teacher is going to recommend him for the gifted & talented program for next year!

Oh, and his favorite position so far is “badger” – HA – that’s what he first called “catcher”, so that’s my new name for it :)
