Netflix Profiles??

WTH?? Another service being discontinued? Sooo… I rated hundreds of movies, why?? I suppose they would rather have these extra profiles changed to regular accounts, so they can make more money (or do they want Blockbuster to make money?). Looks like the “netflix prize” won’t benefit me. I don’t really see why removing a useful service from their website, with no replacement, is an improvement to their website (as stated below). Nor do I understand why the removal motivation is because “it is too difficult to understand” (see below). Apparently it is too difficult to “fix” as well; however, I doubt this is the true motivation.

We wanted to let you know we will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account, effective September 1, 2008.
Each additional Profile Queue will be unavailable after September 1, 2008. Before then, we recommend you consolidate any of your Profile Queues to your main account Queue or print them out.
While it may be disappointing to see Profiles go away, this change will help us continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers.
If you have any questions, please go to http://www.netflix.com/Help?p_faqid=3962 or call us anytime at 1 (888) 638-3549. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Q. What is happening to Profiles?
A:
We will be eliminating Profiles, the feature that allowed you to set up separate DVD Queues under one account.
When? Profiles will be eliminated on September 1, 2008.
Why? While it may be disappointing to see this feature go away, this change will help us to continue to improve the Netflix website for all our customers.
Do I need to do anything? Consider moving all DVD titles in your Profiles Queues to your main account Queue. To do so, log-in and visit this page
How will this impact my account? On September 1, 2008:
  • All DVDs currently at home or in transit will be associated with the main account Queue
  • All Profiles rental history will be added into the main account rental history
  • Your additional Profile Queues will be eliminated. If you would like to keep a copy of each Profile Queue we recommend that you print them out
  • Prior to Profiles going away, we will also email you a copy of your Profile Queues
  • Profiles movie ratings and Profiles Friends connections will no longer be available
  • You will not be able to transfer your Profiles data to a separate new account
  • You will be able to set a maturity filter on the main account

Profiles feature going away
As a Netflix product manager I’m tasked with the wonderful job of helping members find movies they’ll love. But today my job is more challenging as we’ve decided to terminate the profiles feature on September 1. Please know that the motivation is solely driven by keeping our service as simple and as easy to use as possible. Too many members found the feature difficult to understand and cumbersome, having to consistently log in and out of the website.
Continuing to maintain the profiles feature for the passionate few who use it (including myself) distracts us from the mission of presenting to all our members the easiest way to find the best titles for them from the 100k plus on DVD and the 10k plus available instantly.
We will do our best to find better ways for families to share accounts than the existing profiles feature and will continue to invest in improving the website experience in many different ways.

movie of william’s story

i just watched New Rose Hotel. i rented it because of my love for William Gibson. but all i can say now is, Asia Argento..

things darkly

A Scanner Darkly“. Yes, definately a keeper. when i first saw the name, it reminded me of the book title that contained one of my most favorite stories, “Carmilla” (the first lesbian vampire story). The book was “In a Glass Darkly” (a collection of five short stories published in 1872 by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu). his title, and i assume the other, are based on a twist of 1 Corinthians 13:12 = (KJV) “For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.”. and then for the words of someone inside the berkley movement (p.k. dick), to filming in austin, how perfect. and rotoscope rocks. ok, going to watch it again now…

my thoughts on pulses

(guess you shouldn’t read if you haven’t seen yet)

i just watched Kairo (us title = Pulse)(2001) and Pulse(2006). i really like the original version, and liked a few parts in the new american version. but it seems that when we “americanized” the japanese movie (as many others), we lost some of the meaning. by trying to explain everything, and adding in more images (ie ghosts, etc.), instead of letting our imagination run with it. although there were a couple of scenes saved from the first – the jumper & the airplane (maybe another). even the ending resolution of the first movie, about the loneliness in life and death, seems overshadowed in the second by the “techiness”. so it seems that we aren’t as concerened with the meaning behind the original, we just add more “scary images”, add more to the “relationship” scenes, and put in a bunch of cool new technology. at the end you’re like, WTH? at the end of the original you have a question (or two) to quander. at least they didn’t make the end of the second one all happy happy, joy joy. i liked the “alternate” ending much better.

funny movies

just watched Reno 911!: Miami The Movie.  oh my, was it funny.  i love the tv show, and the movie was great.

I’ve seen a couple of other funny ones lately:

Clerks2 – funniest thing I have seen in a long, long time.

Little Miss Sunshine – Cute, crazy fun.

And I can’t wait for these to come out!

The Simpsons Movie

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters

abilene

i spent most of my vacation in abilene, where my dad was in the hospital. too bad i don’t know anyone out there anymore. all my abilene friends, Stephanie, Chance, Clifton, Jeremy, Brian, etc., have all gone their seperate ways. there were a few clubs we liked to go to, but they are all gone too. can’t remember the name of all but one – the Kitchen club.
i did find a pretty cool store in the mall – Hot Topic, not sure if they have one at the mall in austin, hardly ever go to austin, except on the way to work.
also went to see Red Eye. not bad, but not as good as i thought it would be.

dukes

went to see the dukes of hazzard. I just loved it. used to be one of my favorite shows when I was younger, and reminds me of home, ha. my cousin had a green charger and I used to want one so bad. maybe I should get one to play with on the weekends. always need a new project :)

I went to see the Hitchiker’s Guide to the Galaxy tonight. I had loved the books. The movie stuck to the book for the most part. It was a little silly, but it made me laugh sooo much. And that is a precious thing right now. So I give it three thumbs up – ha!
gonna miss you Doug :(
